Lake Como: The Lowdown

This guest post makes me want to book a flight to Italy! No wonder George Clooney bought a villa here 11 years ago!

One of Italy’s lakes, the majestic and tranquil Lake Como can be found in the heart of Lombardy in Northern Italy, and while it’s neighbour, Lake Garda, offers a more tourist-inspired retreat, Lake Como holidays provide added elegance that is seldom seen elsewhere in the area. The villas that scatter the shores alone are enough for you to gaze upon it in awe, without even considering what is waiting for you to explore beyond them.

While you may be able to embark on a little celebrity spotting during your stay here, with many famous faces having a holiday home in the area, that’s not what Neilson holidays on Lake Como are all about. Perfect for the outdoors type, the lake provides a plethora of activities that will suit everyone from the avid hiker to the gentle cyclist.

Of course, what’s the point in staying on the shore of a lake if you’re not going to go in it at least once? Lake Como is both clean and inviting and boat trips are extremely popular throughout the summer season. Bask in the sunshine as you glide past the exquisite villas and gaze out to the luscious forests and rolling hills, before returning to dry land for some authentic Italian cuisine.

If you have the opportunity for a day trip, be sure to spend a couple of hours absorbing the beauty of Vezio Castle that offers stunning panoramas of the surroundings. Waterfalls, forests and wildlife can be found along the way so be sure to stop to take some snapshots of the incredible area.

If you fancy something a little more upbeat than a gentle stroll, make sure you embark on a watersport during your stay; windsurfing and sailing are both popular activities on the lake and a perfect way to pass a few hours, however proficient you are.
