If you’re into contemplative walking and are thinking of going on a pilgrimage, why not join the Camino Ignaciano in Spain this September?
Jesuit Communications Foundation (JesCom), the media arm of the Philippine province of the Society of Jesus, invites travel enthusiasts to join Camino Ignaciano, a pilgrimage that traces the journey taken by St. Ignatius of Loyola from Loyola to Barcelona in Spain. This pilgrimage is scheduled from September 26 to October 10, 2017.
For two weeks, pilgrims will travel through picturesque mountains, beautiful deserts and wide plains. The journey begins in Loyola with a welcome mass at the home where St. Ignatius lived, and leads to remarkable sites such as the Sanctuary of Arantzazu where the Virgin Mary once appeared to a local shepherd, the Basque country of Genevilla, the Marques de Riscal winery, the Roman architecture in Alcala de Ebro, the old university town of Cervera, and more breathtaking places.

The Camino Ignaciano continues to the Monastery of Montserrat where St. Ignatius offered his sword to the Virgin Mary, signifying his change of heart from soldier of war to soldier of God. The pilgrimage culminates in Manresa, which holds a special importance since it is where St. Ignatius wrote his famous Spiritual Exercises.

“Today, the Camino Ignaciano has become a significant pilgrimage route like the Camino de Santiago,” says JesCom Creative Director Pol Mangilog-Saltarin (That’s me! -PinayTraveller). “It is a truly value-laden experience,” Saltarin says of Camino Ignaciano.
JesCom has partnered with Marly Camino, a Madrid-based Spanish company that conducts small tours and walking routes in Spain and Portugal. Because Marly Camino creates packages for 15 pilgrims only, they are able to provide a personalized and memorable experience.
Another partner is The Pilgrims’ Center, a pilgrimage organizer since 1983 that has brought more than 20,000 people to Jerusalem, Medugorje, Marian sites and holy sites around the world.
Fr. Louie Catalan, SJ, will lead the Camino Ignaciano pilgrims in doing St. Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises along the route.
Those who join JesCom’s Camino Ignaciano can expect to receive individualized care, tour assistance by English-speaking guides, private van support, mobile phones with Spanish lines, travel insurance and an exclusive Pilgrim’s Kit. They will also be featured in a documentary created by JesCom’s award-winning production team; the said documentary will be JesCom’s Holy Week Special in 2018 which will be aired on ABS-CBN 2.
