    Madeira in Time Lapse

    /

Madeira, a Portuguese archipelago near the Canary Islands, is one of the places I dream of travelling to someday. I’ve seen a lot of features about it and always, I’d be fascinated by its beauty. But I’ve almost forgotten all about it until I saw this short film. Beautifully shot by Christian Mülhauser, it’s a side of Madeira I’ve never seen before. Madeira from Christian Mülhauser on Vimeo.

Pinay Traveller Recommends #16: Portugal’s Hostel of Style

    /

Pinay Traveller Recommends is a weekly round-up of interesting sites, photos, stories and/or events found around the net. From the outside, it looks like a typical Portuguese World Heritage building fully restored to its tiled glory. But inside, every bit of it is modern. Welcome to Tattva Design Hostel, the largest hostel in Porto. Inspired by the Sanskrit word which means ‘element’, it was designed by NN Arquitectura to evoke the five elements of life:  Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Sky. From the reviews I’ve read, it seems that people genuinely love this hostel because of its affordability (900php/night) and general coolness!  I’m definitely going to check this out next…

    Europe’s Most Underrated Cities

    /

Tired of the usual European destinations?  Well, you might like this.  GQ lists some of the most underrated cities in Europe and gives precious tips on how to avoid the usual tourist traps. From Portugal to Croatia, the list is a delightful mix of the not-so trodden, but nonetheless exciting, destinations. Read on! Porto, Portugal It didn’t look like much. A murky little café across from an underground parking garage. A few stools. Four scrawny-necked barflies standing watch by the door, nursing short beers and ancient grievances. But I’d come straight from the airport, walked myself to exhaustion up and down the steep slopes of the old town, and there…

Pasteis de Belém: Portugal’s Heaven in a Tart

    /

The sugary scent coming from the bakeshop reminds me of everything that is sweet and good and nice. I am standing outside Antiga Confeitaria de Belém, right in the heart of the Belém District in Lisbon. The takeout queue for the bakeshop’s famous product is getting quite long.  I begin to worry that there won’t be any left by the time I get to the counter.  But Alexandra, my pretty Portuguese friend who is babysitting me today, motions me to go inside the café where a table is waiting for us. A waiter who looks like he has been working here since the bakeshop opened in 1837 takes our order…
