I’ve never been to Taiwan but I’d like to visit one day. I would love to see the famous Taipei 101 and the studios of the Kuangchi Program Service (counterpart of Jesuit Communications Philippines where I work). It would also be lovely to see Yuan Yuan and Tuan Tuan at the Taipei Zoo!

But even if Taiwan is miles away, I heard Taiwan is coming to the Philippines! The Taiwan government is launching the Taiwan Excellence campaign. Originally created in the 80s, the campaign is organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT), R.O.C. Taiwan, and implemented by Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA). It aims to promote top quality Taiwanese products among Filipinos. For the first time, we will have an opportunity to discover 175 top quality Taiwanese products from 56 brands, all with the seal of quality. The products are from different industries such as information and communications technologies (ICT), home and living, and sports & leisure. Some of these brands are Acer, Asus, HTC, Tatung, and BenQ.
The Taiwan Excellence campaign ensures that all the brands go through a stingent process to ensure that each one represents Taiwan. All Taiwan based brands are eligible to be part of the campaign. Each one is scored based on its R&D, design, quality, and marketing by an international panel of judges. Each product must score evenly in all four categories. After careful evaluation, those selected are allowed to carry the Taiwan Excellence Seal.
From among the selected products, the judges choose those who deserve the Silver and Gold Award recognition. They will select thirty from the original winners, with only ten to be given the Gold Award, the highest recognition under the campaign, while the remaining finalists will be given the Silver Award. Now that’s a pretty tough process, don’t you think? But the whole procedure is meant to ensure that consumers are able to distinguish quality products and in the end, make more educated choices.
