If you find yourself in Iloilo City, be sure to have a cup of coffee in Madge Cafe.
I first visited this neighborhood coffee shop more than 10 years ago. I was shooting a travel show with The Hubby and one of the restaurants we featured was this quaint little coffee shop located inside La Paz Public Market. Even then, its charm was undeniable.

Today, nothing much has changed. It may be a little more crowded but its appeal to both tourists and locals is still the same.
The cafe’s main attraction, of course, is its deliciously full-bodied coffee made from homegrown coffee beans. That a cup is very cheap (regular coffee is only twenty pesos!) adds to the cafe’s drawing power.
Aside from coffee (which comes in flavors that would rival Starbucks’), there are other local favorites like this toasted wheat bread with margarine.

But perhaps the best part about Madge Cafe is that it has become THE favorite neighborhood hangout long before commercial coffee shops became popular. It is a place where one can have an energizing breakfast, read the morning paper, catch up with friends or simply spend a quiet moment by oneself.
