Pinay Traveller’s Gear

May 8, 2009

Well… almost. I have recently emotionally parted with my Canon Digital Rebel.  And now, I am trying to build a new set of gear.  I want to take photography more seriously and to start that new chapter of my life, I need to upgrade.

1.  The Canon 50D. Because I need to stop playing and start shooting seriously. Honestly, this camera makes my mouth water. Listen:  fifteen megapixel CMOS sensor, faster (than 40D) DIGIC 4 processor, 3.0″ VGA LCD monitor with Live View mode offering 3 AF modes, ISO sensitivity expandable to 12800 and an HDMI connection for high Quality Image viewing.  Also  includes a new Quick Control screen which shows the most commonly used settings and Creative Auto mode for automatic focus and exposure. Wow! Using Uzi, my 350D,  was childplay! The 50D may not be as astig as the Mark II, but it’s certainly a big leap from my Uzi. I also like the wieight and the size and can’t wait to hold my very own (which I will get before month’s end).

eos-50d-bck2.  An 18-200 F/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens. Because changing lenses when travelling can be such a drag.  This lens is perfect for wide architectural shots and close-ups.  I’m a bit torn between the Canon and Sigma lenses.  If it’s quality I’m after, the obvious choice would be Canon.  But the price is a big consideration for me, so this makes Sigma slightly more attractive.  We’ll see…

3.  The Crumpler Whickey and Cox Backpack. Because expensive gear need to be protected. And so far, only Crumpler has lived up to my expectations.  What seals the deal for me is that Whickey and Cox has room for a 15″ laptop.  I guess my only problem will be how to carry all that weight!  (I have scoliosis and cannot carry much.)

I have been working double-hard to save enough money to complete my gear.  But looking at how expensive all these are (the bag alone costs $235), I’m thinking of letting go of some of my stuff just to raise funds (like the Kate Spade bag I hardly use, or the jackets and shoes that are just stored in my closet).  I think I will be busy e-baying for the next couple of weeks. Wish me luck!
